The story of Jesus’ transfiguration gives a good picture of the main point of the book of Hebrews. Though Peter puts Jesus on the same level as Moses and Elijah, God singles out and exalts Jesus, temporarily lifting the veil of his humanity to display his glory, while the others disappear. One writer summarizes it this way: “The glory associated with Moses and Elijah was so eclipsed by the infinitely greater glory connected with Christ, that they faded from view.”
This story from Jesus’ life introduces the main point of the book of Hebrews: Jesus is supreme – greater than all that came before and anything that could come after. And so we need to hold to him alone – because there’s nothing better in all of creation to turn to – no better Savior, no better King, no better High Priest who can sympathize with and help us in our weakness, intercede before us in God’s presence, and give us access to God so that we can draw near to Him.
