As Christians, we are often tempted to think that, during the times of adversity and difficulty in life, we are excused from our obligations to God and permitted to pause our faithfulness to Him. We say to ourselves, “Once the adversity and difficulty is over, then I will be faithful.” Nothing can be further from the truth. In doing this we miss the purpose of adversity and difficulty .. as they are meant for our good. The wilderness wanderings of our lives, the various difficulties and adversities we face, are meant to increase our dependence upon God, and our faithfulness to him, and to teach us that we do not live by bread alone, or by the comforts and pleasures of this world, but only by the Word of God. When we are in the middle of adversity, God wants us to call to mind His past faithfulness to us, to remember His promises to us, and if we can’t think of a time when God was faithful, we should remember the countless times in His Word where He was faithful to His people in the midst of their adversity. We should take comfort, knowing He will be faithful to us in our times of adversity.
